For most people, tattoos are about style, memories, or meaning. For one Australian woman, though, they’ve become something far more practical — a permanent life hack.Thank you for reading this post, don’t forget to subscribe!
D’Kodia Laine, from Canberra, went viral after getting the letters ‘L’ and ‘R’ tattooed on her hands to solve a problem she’d battled with for years: telling left from right.
It’s the kind of struggle plenty of people quietly deal with, but Laine decided to tackle it in a way few would ever consider — by making the answer impossible to forget.
The unique tattoos were inked back in 2021 by tattoo artist Lauren Winzer at Hunter & Fox, a well-known studio in Alexandria, just outside Sydney.
And while the idea might sound like a joke at first, for Laine it was anything but.
She explained that for years she’d relied on the old trick of making an ‘L’ shape with her hands to figure out which direction was which — something she admitted became more embarrassing as she got older.
“My friends would joke about how silly it looks having an adult make the L shape with your hands to differentiate,” she told the Daily Mail.
It’s a familiar childhood trick, but admittedly not one many people expect to still be using in adulthood.
For Laine, things finally reached breaking point during a scavenger hunt at a party in Canberra last year, where she was put in charge of navigating her team.
That didn’t exactly go to plan.
After directing the driver into what she described as “a few wrong turns”, one of her friends scribbled an ‘L’ and an ‘R’ onto her hands as a temporary fix.
That throwaway moment quickly sparked a much bigger idea.
“It started as a joke but it’s actually super useful and I don’t look dumb making an L with my fingers to figure it out,” she said.
And just like that, what began as party banter turned into permanent ink.
Laine said when she sent photos of the finished tattoos to friends, their reactions were a mix of laughter and disbelief.
“I just got a lot of laughing back and [messages like] “oh you were being serious!”,” she said.
But the tattoos have already proved useful — especially behind the wheel, where split-second decisions matter most.
Even her boyfriend is apparently relieved.
“He’s grateful that now he won’t get secondhand embarrassment!” she said.
The tattoo itself is simple: a clean ‘L’ on one hand and an ‘R’ on the other. No frills, no elaborate design — just instant clarity whenever she needs it.
Lauren Winzer later shared the finished work on Instagram, where it quickly gained thousands of likes and triggered a flood of reactions from people who could clearly relate.
In the caption, Winzer wrote: “Not only are tattoos cute, but they can also be super functional!!! Good luck with all your future directions, happy to help guide you.”
The post quickly struck a chord.
Many admitted they’d considered doing the exact same thing, while others praised Laine for turning a lifelong frustration into something clever.
One commenter wrote: “I love this! I definitely need to do this myself.”
Another added: “Have I not said I wanted this done?!”
Others chimed in to admit they’d struggled with left and right too, with some saying they’d spent years relying on little tricks of their own.
That reaction has clearly helped Laine feel a little less alone.
“Based on the comments on the photo on Lauren’s page it seems to be a tattoo a lot of people are saying they need so I don’t feel too dumb now,” Ms Laine said.
And honestly, it’s hard to argue with the logic.
Do you know somebody who could do with getting the same tattoos?
